Easy Instant Pot Dessert

What Is A Cobbler
A cobbler is a long-loved dessert featuring a fruit-filled base topped with a batter, biscuit, or cake-like topping. In this recipe the fruit base is cherry pie filling and the topping is a Devil’s Food cake mix transformed into a cake-like cobbler layer in the pressure cooker.
How To Make Instant Pot Cobbler

Best Cake Mix To Use
You can use any boxed cake mix you prefer. Devil’s Food or another chocolate cake mix gives the classic Black Forest flavor, but white or yellow cake mix works well if you want a lighter cobbler. Boxed cake mix keeps this dessert quick and predictable.

What Pan To Use
Use any Instant Pot–safe pan that fits inside your cooker. A 7-inch cake pan works well. I used a silicone sling to lift the pan safely, but a metal trivet or a makeshift stand of crumpled aluminum foil will also work. The important part is to keep the pan out of the water.
What Size Instant Pot To Use
This recipe works in both 6-quart and 8-quart Instant Pots. For an 8-quart pot add 2 cups of water to the bottom of the cooker; for a 6-quart use 1 cup of water.
Is This A Dump Cake?
Although the recipe is simple, it’s technically a cobbler rather than a dump cake. Dump cakes typically involve literally dumping ingredients into a pan without mixing. For this cobbler you mix the cake mix and melted butter before sprinkling it over the pie filling, so there’s a bit more technique involved.
How To Store
Because this cobbler contains pie filling, store leftovers in the refrigerator. Cover tightly with plastic wrap or transfer to an airtight container. It will keep well for 4–6 days.
Can I Swap Pie Filling?
Yes—feel free to swap cherry for strawberry, mixed berry, or your favorite pie filling. You can also use homemade pie filling if you prefer. The recipe is flexible and forgiving.

Instant Pot Black Forest Cobbler
Ingredients
- 1 box chocolate cake mix 5.25 oz size
- 1 stick unsalted butter melted
- 2 cans cherry pie filling
- whipped topping or ice cream optional
Instructions
-
Choose an Instant Pot–safe pan that fits inside your cooker (a 7-inch cake pan works well). Pour the two cans of cherry pie filling into the bottom of the pan.
-
In a separate bowl, add the cake mix and the melted stick of butter. Stir until the mixture is crumbly and evenly combined.
-
Crumble or sprinkle the cake mix mixture over the cherry filling. You don’t have to use all the cake mix if you prefer less topping—the more you add, the more pronounced the chocolate layer will be.
-
Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil to prevent condensation from dripping into the cobbler while cooking.
-
Pour water into the Instant Pot: use 1 cup for a 6-quart pot or 2 cups for an 8-quart pot. Place the trivet or a silicone sling inside the cooker and lower the pan onto it.
-
Seal the lid and set to High Pressure. Cook for 13 minutes, then allow a 15-minute natural release before carefully releasing any remaining pressure.
-
Remove the cobbler from the Instant Pot, unwrap, and serve warm. Top with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream if desired.
