Creative Cupcake Decorating Ideas and Techniques

Today is the second day of Blogging Marathon #18, Week 2. I’m sharing a few simple cake and cupcake decoration ideas. These scroll-style decorations are easy to make, yet a whole cake covered with them looks stunning. These cupcakes were my daughter Sruti’s favourites from the batch I made yesterday — she chose all of them and wouldn’t let her dad have any.

Start by preparing a smooth buttercream icing and tint it with the colour of your choice.

Using a small spatula, spread the buttercream over each cupcake. The surface may be uneven at first, which is fine — you’ll refine it later.

Allow the cupcakes to air dry for about 15 minutes. The icing should no longer stick to your finger when lightly touched. At that point, place a clean tissue over the top and gently smooth with your fingers to even the surface.

Fill a disposable piping bag or a resealable plastic bag with white icing. Snip a very small hole at the tip and pipe your designs. Scrolls, rangoli-inspired patterns, mehandi motifs, or simple geometric shapes all work beautifully. Keep the lines delicate for an elegant look.
