A weekend in Gulf Shores, Alabama means sun, sand and fun! Gulf Shores is a wonderful spot for a family vacation or a quick weekend escape. Here are some favorite things to do, see, and eat along Alabama’s white sand beaches.
Recently I spent a weekend in Gulf Shores, Alabama. I had never been before and didn’t know what to expect, but the destination exceeded my expectations. Between the wide sandy beaches, abundant outdoor activities and fresh Gulf seafood, Gulf Shores quickly became one of my favorite coastal escapes. Below I share the highlights from my trip and a few must-dos for anyone planning a visit.
Gulf Shores is ideal for outdoor lovers and foodies alike. If you’re visiting this summer or planning a future trip, read on for the best things to see, do and taste on Alabama’s coast.
(1) Hop on a bike and ride the Backcountry Trail through Gulf State Park
Start your morning with an energizing bike ride. The Backcountry Trail system offers over 15 miles of paths through marshes and shaded canopy, winding through Gulf State Park. The park itself is well maintained with excellent facilities and camping options. You can rent a bike or bring your own. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the route—in my ride I spotted baby alligators and many bird species. A morning ride is a great way to begin the day and work up an appetite for fresh Gulf seafood.
(2) Enjoy lunch at The Beach House Kitchen and Cocktails
For fresh, flavorful coastal fare, The Beach House Kitchen and Cocktails is a standout. The restaurant is casual and inviting, and its menu focuses on locally sourced ingredients prepared with care. The blackened fish tacos were a particular highlight for me—so good I’d return just for them. Other favorites include crawfish mac & cheese, coconut shrimp and house-made banana pudding ice cream. If you want a reliably delicious lunch spot, this should be on your list.
(3) Relax on the beach
No Gulf Shores visit is complete without time on the sand. The shoreline stretches for miles with wide, soft, sugar-white beaches that rival many Gulf Coast destinations. As someone familiar with Florida beaches, I was pleasantly surprised by how beautiful Gulf Shores beaches are—soft, white and perfect for a lazy afternoon. Spend a few hours soaking up the sun, walking the shoreline, or simply dipping your toes in the clear water.
(4) Nature cruise on Wolf Bay
Take a nature cruise to explore the area’s waterways and learn about the local fishing industry. A guided tour of Wolf Bay and nearby bays provides insight into oysters, blue crab and shrimp harvesting. Cruises are both fun and educational for adults and children—on my trip I learned how local fisheries operate and even heard about catching your own shrimp. The scenic waterways also offer great opportunities to spot wildlife and enjoy coastal vistas.
(5) Hang out at The Hangout Restaurant
The Hangout is a lively, family-friendly spot with ocean views, live music and activities for all ages. It hosts popular events and creates a festive atmosphere with a stage, fire pits, games and a large sand play area. The menu is approachable and fun—try peel-and-eat shrimp or a big, juicy burger while enjoying the beachside vibe. It’s a great place to spend an evening with family or friends.
(6) Enjoy a boat ride or rent a paddle board on the bayou
With beautiful weather and calm waters, the bayous and intercoastal areas are perfect for boating or paddle boarding. Rent a paddle board or hop on a powerboat and explore shallow channels where you might spot dolphins and other marine life. The emerald green waters are stunning and make for a peaceful afternoon on the water.
(7) Taste local Gulf seafood
Seafood lovers will be in their element. Sample local specialties and be adventurous—on my trip I tried lionfish ceviche, a responsible choice since lionfish are invasive in the region. Several restaurants serve excellent seafood; Coast Restaurant at The Beach Club and Voyagers at Perdido Beach Resort are two other favorites worth trying. From oysters to shrimp and regional catches, the local seafood scene is a major highlight of any Gulf Shores visit.
