Chic Navy Blue Dining Room Ideas for Stylish Entertaining

We have a navy blue dining room and it’s officially ready for meals. Dining rooms might feel old-fashioned to some, but we’re enjoying having a dedicated space. The deep navy is a striking contrast in our mostly white home, and it’s become one of my favorite rooms.

How Our Navy Blue Dining Room Came Together

Some links in the original post were affiliate links and helped support the blog. I’ve kept the focus here on design and practical choices so you can get the look and function without the clutter.

When our builder said dining rooms were becoming less common, I still wanted one. With an open floor plan and a family of six, I wanted a designated area for everyday meals as well as birthdays and holiday dinners. Time will tell how often we use it, but so far it’s been a lovely addition.

The light fixture was the showpiece from the start — a splurge that really elevated the room. The brass detailing is unique and feels timeless.

Coming Along… A Navy Blue Dining Room But Still A Before:

This photo was taken about six weeks into the process:

We started the transformation with navy grasscloth wallpaper, which added beautiful texture and depth. Grasscloth reads like fabric on the walls and gives the room a tactile, layered look.

If you’re still choosing paint, Benjamin Moore Hale Navy is a popular and reliable choice for deep blue rooms. For balance in a dark room, I intentionally added lots of white trim and furniture to help reflect light and keep the space from feeling too heavy.

How Our Navy Dining Room Came Together

The Farmhouse Table

The table became the starting point for the room. We wanted a sturdy, kid-friendly dining table that didn’t feel too precious. We found a smooth, neutral farmhouse-style table in a stonewashed finish that fits everyday life while still looking beautiful.

(I kept notes on how the table held up over time and the finish has worn nicely.)

The Chairs

To keep the room relaxed but elevated, we used rattan armchairs at the ends with tailored, high-performance cushions that are wipeable and washable. The brass accents on the chairs echo the chandelier above and help tie the look together. The armchairs are comfortable and versatile — they’d work as desk chairs too.

For the kids’ seats, we chose lightweight white bentwood-style chairs. They’re easy for children to move and feel more authentic than metal alternatives.

Grounding the Space

Rugs in dining areas can be controversial, but I wanted a lighter rug to contrast with the dark walls. We selected a durable outdoor-style rug that can handle everyday messes. For big holiday feasts with extra guests and little ones, I’m not afraid to roll the rug up — practicality wins when needed. Still, I love the way it anchors the room on most days.

I also incorporated a woven bar cart with functional features like ice bins, and placed a textured mirror above it to add brightness and reflection against the navy walls.

Choosing Artwork

The oversized artwork near the front door is a focal point that sets the tone for the room. Muted colors in large-scale prints can replace the need for extra accessories on a wall and create a calm, curated feel.

Other Design Elements

A sideboard sits beneath a double sconce and provides storage and surface space for decorative objects such as an aged brass lamp, framed textiles, and a tall vase with greenery. These pieces add character and balance the room visually.

Our Entry Right Off The Dining Room

The built-in entry bench received a custom, high-performance cushion that stands up to kids’ bare feet and seasonal messes. It has a removable cover for easy washing — a small detail with a big impact on daily maintenance. A lumbar pillow with tassels and a plaid cushion complete the cozy look.
