Southern-Style Breakfast at Bryant’s Diner — Memphis Morning Favorites

On a recent US road trip to New Orleans, I planned to pass through Memphis right after breakfast. I was craving an authentic Southern breakfast with real biscuits—not the quick Waffle House or pre-made kind I’d been eating so far.

After a bit of online research, I narrowed the city’s breakfast spots down to three contenders. One place kept coming up for its homemade biscuits: Bryant’s Breakfast.

I don’t rely on reviews alone—taste is subjective—so I looked for photos of the food. The pictures convinced me it was worth exiting the highway, and it didn’t disappoint.

My plate was enormous: scrambled eggs, Southern-style sausage, three house-made biscuits, grits, and gravy. The biscuits were buttery, flaky, and very satisfying. They were large and filling, so finishing all three was a challenge—but I managed. I also tried gravy for the first time. It’s different from the gravies I know at home; this one was thick, peppery, and pale in color. It’s a hearty, savoury sauce that pairs perfectly with biscuits. I enjoyed most of it, even if the flavor took a moment to get used to. Grits, however, aren’t for me, so I left those untouched.

Between the quality of the biscuits and the generous portions, Bryant’s Breakfast is worth a stop. The servings offer great value, and the biscuits alone make the trip worthwhile.
