👩🍳 How to fill a cake with cake filling
Follow a few simple steps to keep filled cakes neat and stable and to prevent fillings from leaking between layers.

For dark berry fillings that can stain cake slices, spread a thin layer of buttercream on each layer first to protect the crumb and color.

For soft fillings like whipped cream or fruit compotes, pipe a ring of buttercream around the edge to form a dam before spooning in the filling.

I build my buttercream dam 2–3 rings high so fillings stay contained when the next layer is added.

When you place the top layer, some buttercream may squeeze out. Smooth it against the side with an offset spatula to seal the edges before applying a crumb coat.
For extra reassurance, chill filled cakes in the freezer for 10 minutes before applying a crumb coat. For a full layering demonstration, try the Cake Ring Method in my layering guide and watch the Blueberry Cake video where the filling starts at 0:41.

These filling ideas are a great way to get creative and add new flavor combinations to your baking. I hope they inspire you to experiment with textures and tastes in your next cake.
